FREE SCHOOL MEALS

Did you know that since September 2014, all children in England in Reception, Year 1 & Year 2 are entitled to Universal Free School Meal every day?  In addition, since September 2023, all children in London in KS2 are entitled to Free School Meals under the Mayor's Meal's scheme.

For all children who are eligible for Free School Meals based on their economic circumstances (i.e not under the above schemes) school will also receive additional funding called Pupil Premium.

If your child is in any year group from Reception to Year 6, and you receive one of the listed qualifying benefits below, you could be entitled to free school meals and should complete an online application form as soon as possible.

Qualifying benefits for Free School Meals include:

  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseekers Allowance
  • Support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • The guarantee element of Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit (provided you are not entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual income of no more than £16,190)
  • Working Tax Credit run-on – paid for four weeks after you stop qualifying for working Tax Credit
  • Universal Credit (provided you have an annual net earned income of no more than £7,400, as assessed by earnings from up to 3 of your most recent assessment periods)

How to apply for Free School Meals

To check if your child is entitled to Free School Meals and Pupil Premium, please contact the School Office for assistance to provide consent for your details to be checked by the Local Authority under their FSM checking service.

You can apply regardless of which Borough you live, so don’t delay if you think you may qualify!

It is important to note that:

  • The Government gives additional funding to schools for those children entitled to free school meals.
  • Schools use this money to contribute towards additional resources that help improve the quality of education.
