Art Intent

Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. At Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School we believe Art and Design Education is an entitlement for all pupils and plays an important part in each child's development.  We provide an ambitious Art curriculum that is broad and well-balanced, which follows the National Curriculum. High quality Art lessons will inspire pupils to think innovatively and develop creative understanding. Our approach provides pupils with opportunities to apply their skills using a range of media and materials. Pupils learn the skills of drawing, painting, printing, collage, textiles and 3D work.

Pupils are introduced to a range of artworks and develop knowledge of the styles and vocabulary used by famous artists and crafts people in order to ensure that pupils have the cultural capital to be successful citizens. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation

In Art, pupils are expected to be reflective and evaluate their work, thinking about how they can make changes and keep improving. This should be meaningful and continuous throughout the process, with evidence of age-related verbal and written refection in Sketch Books. Pupils are encouraged to take risks, make mistakes and experiment.  They should be able to reflect verbally or in their sketchbooks on why some ideas and techniques are successful or not for a particular project.

We aim to ensure all pupil:

  • produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  • evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
